Colchester claims to be the oldest recorded town in England,
this is desputed by nearby Suffolk neighbour Ipswich. One
claim which is without dispute true is that the castle is
the largest Norman keep in Europe. It is home to a splendid
display of artiefacts including those of the Romans as well
as a display of the Siege of Colchester during the English
Civil War. Situated in Castle Park in the town centre. Allow
at least 3 hours for your visit.
Hollytrees is a beautiful Georgian town house in the gronds
of the award-winning Castle Park. built in 1718 it has been
owned by some of the wealthiest families in Colchester. Now
a fascinating museum for all to enjoy and explore.

museum where history is told with fun and humor. Visit the childhood
gallery with its large playroom with snakes and ladders in the
floor and displays celebrating Colchester's famous nursery rhymes
Old King Cole and Twinkle Twinkle Little Star. (Although Colchester
claims to be the birth place of the latter this is disputed
by Suffolk's town of Lavenham who also lay claim to the place
where the rhyme was written).
Be transported back to the days before washing machines to ty
out dolly pegs, or marvel at the Hollytrees dolls house.
Admission is free, open Mon-Sat 10am-5pm and 11ma-5pm Sundays.

The town's big claim to fame is it's award-winning Zoo. One
of the finest in Europe it is open all year round (except Christmas
Day). Situated on Mauldon road, Stanway.

snakes or help fly a bird of prey. Constant changing and updating
a new addition is the Playa Patagonia (underwater sea lion experience).
