Layer Marney, Essex


Layer Marney Tower is signposted off the B1022 Colchester to Maldon Road and open to the public April to September every day except Friday and Saturdays. The red brickwork of the many-storied gateway with it's towers and twisted chimneys are all that exist to suggest the splendour of the Tudor mansion that was projected to rival Hampton Court but never built.

 

The tallest Tudor gatehouse in the country with stunning views to be seen from the top. There are also lovely gardens, rare breed farm animals, medieval barn and a country walk.

The church, reconstructed in the 16th Century with its superb Marney tombs, is also remarkable with its beautiful brick and terracotta work.

Open: 2 April-1 October, Sun-Thurs, 12 noon-5pm (closed Fridays and Saturdays).

Bank Holiday Sundays and Mondays 11am-5pm.

Save a Long Wasted Walk.....As you make your final approach to Layer Marney you will see the gatehouse in front of you a gate (usually closed) and the Tower in view beyond. The road goes to the left of this and down a hill, at the bottom you go thru a gate to the car park. When you walk back do not walk all the way to the top of the hill but turn left just outside the car park and follow along the lane, the entrance is on your right.
