Our first collaboration with the Suffolk County Music
Service proved to be a big success when we performed with
the North Suffolk Youth Orchestra at
St Felix School, Southwold on 20 March
2009. This was the SYMPHONY AND SONG
Concert in the Silcox Theatre at St Felix School. This
was the first public concert in this theatre since it
was opened by Jill Freud on 5 July 2008.
The North Suffolk Youth Orchestra is part of the Suffolk
County Music Service. This provides a ‘one-stop
music service’ that seeks to enable schools to plan,
provide and deliver a comprehensive music curriculum for
all pupils including, where appropriate, specialist instrumental
and vocal tuition.
The Service also provides an extensive programme of extra-curricular
activities for young musicians known as ‘Suffolk
Youth Music’. This includes 6 local Music Schools
that meet mostly on Saturdays. Young musicians are then
encouraged to move onto the Area Activities of youth orchestras,
bands, jazz orchestras, string ensembles and a choir,
meeting on weekday evenings in Ipswich, Lowestoft and
Bury St Edmunds. At the highest level Suffolk is represented
by 3 ensembles that work to the most advanced standards,
the Suffolk Youth Orchestra, the Suffolk Youth Wind Band
and the Suffolk Young Strings. The first two also tour
overseas to Europe every year, and all three perform at
the world renowned Snape Maltings Concert Hall. For more
information of services provided by the Suffolk County
Music Service please visit www.suffolkcountymusicservice.org.uk
We were also invited by Pontin’s Holiday
Park, Pakefield to perform in a series of performances
as part of their Wednesday night entertainment at the
same time that we were getting ready for the St Felix
Concert! This was a new venture for Pakefield Singers
to perform 4 times in a five week series on 4th,18th,
and 25th March and 1st April. Each time was different
with a new audience each week (averaging 650) and changes
in the lineup for each performance as it is very difficult
for every member to be available every week, as anyone
who sings in a choir will understand. The audiences seemed
to like us and it was a bit of fun for us!
Pakefield Singers will now be taking a rest in performances
after a very busy spring while we extend our repertoire
for a busy period from June to December.

| FUNDING
|
|
|
The Society
is self-funding and receives no sponsorship income.
It does, however, continue to have significant regular
costs in the form of rehearsal costs over 46 weeks
of the year, whereas most choral societies only
rehearse for 30 weeks or less a year for the same
membership fees. There is also the cost of buying
sheet music. As we are a choir with a continuously
growing repertoire, rather than a choral society
doing single performances of single works, we therefore
cannot hire our sheet music, but have to have enough
copies of each item of our repertoire for each member.
This means that we have to buy our music, an additional
cost compared to most choirs / choral societies.
It is not a case of buying one and giving the members
photocopies, as photocopying music is strictly illegal.
We have however, been very fortunate in obtaining
a number of grants which have been essential for
the Society's development.
Suffolk County Council
Locality Budgets, Awards for All, Shell Exploration
and Production, and Anglia Regional Cooperative
Society have supported us. The Society gratefully
acknowledges all the very generous financial help
that it has received. However, there are continuing
financial demands as we further develop our technique
and repertoire. A recent example was our 2007 tour
to Aarhus in Denmark at the invitation of the Danish
choir Kor-I-Nord. This was only possible due to
the fundraising efforts of many people, both by
the members of the Pakefield Singers and many of
those outside.
If you wish to sponsor the Society or know of anyone
who might wish to sponsor us, please leave a message
for the Society on the Contact
page».

| PERFORMANCE
RISERS & TRAILER |
|
|
|
We had our tiered performance
risers specially constructed in order that we can
perform in a variety of curved or straight formations.
The whole outfit is assembled from many light components,
allowing the whole assembly to be easily put together
and taken apart for each concert.
Suffolk County Council Locality Budgets largely
supported their purchase in 2005.
Top two pictures show how the risers were set up
for our concert at St Peter & St John Church,
Kirkley in June 2008.
|
|
This
is how the risers were set up at the St Felix
School Concert in March 2009. These risers
are available free for other groups to use.
If you would like to use the risers for your
own group’s performance then please
contact the Events Coordinator Alan Honeywood
on 01502-564007 for details |
.
|
In order to store and transport the risers, we also
had this trailer specially built. The trailer is then
able to be towed to and from our performance venues
with a medium-sized car.
Again we were able to secure funding from Suffolk
County Council Locality Budgets, which largely financed
its purchase.
So you need to look out for us, as we get ready for
our concerts. |
