THE HISTORY OF PAKEFIELD SINGERS
In the summer of 2002, Pakefield Youth put on a production of Joseph and his Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat. There was a call for singers to support this production and a number of ladies came forward to help, prepared by Vetta Wise who had just arrived from South Africa. After this production, they decided to stay together under the musical directorship of Vetta. By Christmas 2002, the group had swelled to 20 and after Christmas, decided to invite men to join. Thus the Pakefield Singers as we now know it was born.

The original Choir, August 2002
Their first concert using this title was given in March 2003 in aid of the Pakefield Church Improvement Fund. In the Spring of that year, the Singers competed at the Gorleston Festival and won the Galliard Trophy. In July 2003, Pakefield Youth staged Oliver! in Pakefield Church. The Singers provided adult support and more people, having sung with the Singers, decided to stay with them. Vetta ran the choir for the first year and then asked for a committee to be formed so that things could be more democratic! A temporary committee was formed and an official committee was formed in July 2003 and the inaugural meeting of the Pakefield Singers was held on 20 August 2003. In that year the choir joined Making Music!.
The society has since grown to some 60 singers and has a waiting list of people wishing to join. They pride themselves on having a Young Choir of 10 members who are part of the main choir. They enjoy performing an eclectic variety of music from Mozart to McCartney and from Caithness to Cape Town! Whilst the Society does perform at concerts for their own benefit, it really enjoys singing at concerts where there is fundraising for local charities.

At the end of 2005 a section of Pakefield Singers collaborated with parts of the Beccles and the Lowestoft Choral Societies at the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra Christmas Concert at the Marina Theatre, Lowestoft. We had to do this as there isn't enough room on the Marina Theatre stage for 200 singers and the orchestra!
In May 2006 the whole of Pakefield Singers joined forces with the full Beccles Choral Society in a performance of Carl Orff's Carmina Burana in its original accompaniment of 2 pianos and percussion at the world-renowned Snape Maltings Concert Hall. This work is usually performed with an orchestra, and the original score was orchestrated for the first performance of Carmina in Frankfurt in 1937.

2007 proved to be an even busier year. Pakefield Singers went on tour to Aarhus, Denmark in May 2007 in response to an invitation for a return visit from Kor-I-Nord, a choir from Aarhus who visited Lowestoft in 2005. In August Pakefield Singers again joined forces with Beccles Choral Society to perform ‘Carmina Burana’. This was part of the ‘Last Night at the Proms Concert’ with the London Gala Concert, conducted by Stephen Bell, at Kentwell Hall. The year was completed with a full strength Pakefield Singers performing at the Gala Celebration Concert with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Nick Davies at the Marina Theatre in December.
