May Day was celebrated at Kentwell Hall,
near Long Melford with age old traditional dancing and plays.
Over 100 re-enacters along with hundreds of "time-travellers"
from the year 2006...stepped back in time. They tied favours
to the May Tree (while making a wish for their hearts desire),
men from the crowds assisted the village men to hoist the
pole and then following the crowning of the May Queen by
the lady of the "big" house the traditional dancing
around the pole began.
Traditional "mummers" plays took place in front
of the great house, The Story of St George and the Dragon
and later a more risque story of the miller, his wife and
two drunken friends and much confusion!
Re-enactment days take place at Kentwell Hall throughout
the year and are always great fun.
