Some great events taking place this Half Term with children specifically in mind….at National Trust properties across East Anglia.


Will your child be the next Ray Mears or Bear Grylls? With wide open spaces for energetic children and an abundance of outdoor activities to entertain, why not have an amazing adventure with the National Trust this February half term?

Nature’s playground is a must for any budding explorer. From forest survival skill days to animal tracking and nest box building, the National Trust has some great open spaces and events for the whole family to enjoy together, and you don’t have to go far to discover them.

So, make the National Trust the start of your family adventure this half term. Here are some of the great events and activities to look forward to in the East of England:

Trail blazing

Wicken Fen, Cambridgeshire
Wild Geocache Trail, Tuesday 22 February, from 10.30am
Discover secret parts of the fen on a high tech game of hide and seek using satellites orbiting high in the sky above earth. Child £4.50 (including hire of GPS receiver -£2.25 if you have your own receiver)

Oxburgh Hall, Norfolk
Woodland Trail, Saturday and Sundays, 19, 20, 26 & 27 February, 11am – 4pm
Let the children burn off some of their energy, with our self-guided walk around the woods. Why not finish with hot chocolate and flapjacks in the tea-room? Normal admission.

Sheringham Park, Norfolk
Animal Tracks & Signs, Saturday 19 & Monday 21 February, 10.30am – midday
Learn how to follow the trails animals make and spot the tell-tale signs they leave behind with Rob our Learning Officer. £3.50 Child, £1.50 Adults. Booking essential on 01263 820550.

Sheringham Park, Norfolk
Nature Detectives Trail, Saturday 19 to Sunday 27 February, 10am – 3pm
Discover the clues animals leave behind in the park with a fun self guided trail and win a prize.
£2 (includes prize). Car parking charge applies for non members.

Wicken Fen, Cambridgeshire
Wild Cycle Treasure Trail, Thursday 24 February, 10.30am or 2pm
Bring your bike, and follow clues on your mobile phone that will help guide you to the treasure. Child £4.50, booking essential on 01353 720274.

Tweet the birds in your garden

Dunstable Downs, Bedfordshire
Nest Box Making – Sunday 20 February, 11am- 3pm
Help the birds in your garden to find a home to bring up their young, come and build a nest box with our countryside team. £7 includes tuition and nest box. Booking advised on 01582 500920.

Hatfield Forest, Essex
Bird Box Building, Sunday 20 February, 11am – 4pm
Bring along the whole family and build a nest box to take home and attract birds to nest in your garden. Full instructions given – Not only for DIY enthusiasts! Suitable for accompanied children. £6 per box, car park charge applies. Booking essential on 01279 870678.

Blickling Estate, Norfolk
Bird Box Making, Wednesday 23 February, 1pm – 4pm
Make a bird box with the gardening team to take home and encourage feathered friends to your garden. Normal admission, plus £5 per person, booking not needed, simply drop in.

Ickworth, Suffolk
Fun Bird Feeders, Tuesday 22 February, 11am – 3pm
Look after the birds in your garden; come along and make bird feeders from natural and recycled materials. Mix a tasty, energy filled treat for the birds to hang in your gardens. Park & garden admission applies.




Wild imagination

Anglesey Abbey, Cambridgeshire
Daily, 10.30am – 4.30pm
It may be misty, moist or even freezing cold at half term, but Anglesey Abbey offers so much fun the weather doesn’t matter. Our interactive information stations provide families with all the fun they need in our Wildlife Discovery Area, where dens and structures wait to be climbed into and explored. Why not go on a mini-beast trail or seek out a cosy hide to huddle up in and enjoy some wildlife spotting? Wander through the wild wood where trees take on the shapes of magical creatures from a story book, or gather twigs to create your own den. It’s all just waiting to be discovered!

Wicken Fen, Cambridgeshire
Wild Art, Wednesday 23 February, 10.30am – 12.30pm or 2pm – 4pm
Collect natural materials from the fen such as reeds, leaves, twigs, berries and mud glorious mud to create your very own wild masterpiece. Have some arty fun this February half term. £4.50, booking essential on 01353 720274.

Wimpole Estate, Cambridgeshire
Textile Tuesdays, Tuesday 22 February, 11.30am to 1.30pm
Discover how we clean and care for the textiles in our collection with the Housekeeping team, drop in between 11.30am and 1.30pm. Normal Hall admission applies.

Sutton Hoo, Suffolk
Get Crafty! Tuesday 22 and Thursday 24 February, 11am – 1pm and 2pm – 4pm
Drop in and make an Anglo-Saxon shield fit for a warrior. Normal admission.
